What Day it It?

Monday was National Margarita Day and it got me thinking about our idiotic obsession to give everything its own day. I don’t pretend to know the staff in your office or the circle of friends in which you run but around me…almost everyone considers every day…Margarita Day. In fact, there’s so much tequila in some of them, they’re usually not sure what day it is anyway. Most of the people I know only get truly alarmed when the price of limes goes up because they believe that any day that ends in, well…day…is a good day for a margarita.
I got off on a little tangent here because apparently everyone I know drinks but really, the fascination we have with giving everything its day continues to astound me. I understand Groundhog Day…that’s important and weather-related, and I need to know how to dress for the next 6 weeks, and I’m a capitalist so I understand why Hallmark would like every day to be, “Buy a greeting card day” but I’m curious as to how some of these other factions manufactured their own day.
Monday was also International Dog Biscuit Day and while I enjoy a nice Milkbone as much as the next guy, I’m not sure it needs its own day. And what dog thought it up? Did some dachshund in West Covina just get hungry and think, “How can I get a biscuit out of this idiot with only two legs?” And why is it international? Is some beagle in Boston trading biscuit recipes with a basset hound in Belgrade? Ironically, Tuesday (always the last Tuesday in February) was also National Spay Day and I can pretty much guarantee that no dog came up with that one. Dogs all over the world were probably thinking, “I got a dog biscuit Monday; I wonder what will happen on Tuesday…Oh, we’re going for a ride…NOOOOOOO!
Since I have dogs I can almost get behind the idea that dogs came up with Dog Biscuit Day but I’m still puzzled by all the food days. Like everyone else, my dogs told me it was International Dog Biscuit Day but I can’t remember the last time I had a full-blown conversation with a Snickers bar. That would be like the guy living behind the dumpster who gets into an argument with his shopping cart. Yesterday was National Chocolate Covered Nut Day and I suspect I would have to follow a trail of M&M’s to get to the history of that day. It was also National Clam Chowder Day and I’m convinced this was part of a master conspiracy by a bunch of fisherman who had leftovers after they made their delivery to Red Lobster. I tried to ask them about it but they clammed up.
Saturday is National Polar Bear Day. Polar Bears all live way up north and the cell service is really bad so how did they get the word out and what are they really after? Another seal for breakfast? Maybe a nice walrus salad? It is also National Kahlua Day which brings us full circle from Margarita Day. I expect this one was dreamed up by my friends as merely an excuse to drink…as if they needed an excuse. Why else would be have a ‘National’ day for a product made in Mexico? That when you put ice in it, you call it a Black Russian? Add milk and it’s a White Russian? That sounds fishier than the clam chowder thing because I’m pretty sure India doesn’t have a National Eat a Cheeseburger Day and vegans aren’t getting much traction in their push for a National Eat a Bowl of Dirt Day.
