In what you may, or may not, believe is a decline in moral values over the last 40 years, more and more people seem to be living together outside the bounds of marriage and while many have asked my opinion, the simple truth is…I just don’t care. I don’t care if people do it for love or just to save money on rent, and I’m bright enough to know that every homesteading couple in a covered wagon crossing the plains 170 years ago didn’t have rings on their fingers so I don’t see it as a new issue. Also, most of them had babies before they got to Colorado, probably because Nebraska was so boring…when you weren’t being attacked by Indians…I mean Native Americans. These days, with everyone living together, young couples will never know the thrill of slinking out of a strange house under the cover of darkness without waking the parents. What is interesting to me is the cottage industry all this cohabiting has spawned and, for lack of a better term, I will call it “starter kids.”
In what appears to be a boon for the pet industry since this whole neuter or spay thing doesn’t seem to be taking off, every young couple I know has adopted a pet so they can practice at being a parent. My son and daughter-in-law-to-be adopted a retriever mix as a puppy and except for that whole tail thing, I think they would have had her in a diaper. She turned 1 yesterday and this is what they did to her…doesn’t she look happy? She even has a middle name and for her birthday they are taking her to Abercrombie & Beagle andthey baked her a cake. They are finally weaning her off puppy food, all because it says so on the bushel of chow she goes through weekly. Apparently, puppies need to get all their nutrients so for the first year, she was only fed puppy chow, shoes and a couch. She is very well-behaved for the most part now but they have friends who have a lab whose only talent seems to be climbing onto tables to eat off my plate…with me.
I understand these young couples treating their pets like children because they’re still young enough to remember how they were treated but, while they don’t believe it, they’re still pets. It’s like that whole…extra pair of legs thing, slipped right by them. I would have thought the drinking out of the toilet would have tipped them off. I believe this will lead to other issues as they move on to having real babies and post a picture of their newborn lying on a training pad by the back door.
I really have no problems with young adults having starter kids but I don’t want them to mistake it for the real world and children because there are some glaring differences. See, living with children is kind of like living with bums…they never have any money, they want food and they’re always missing a shoe. Really, the best part when comparing a pet to a child is that when your dog is a teenager…it’s not going to hate you.
