So I’m sitting in the waiting room in my hospital gown with the lovely backless look while waiting for the results to see if they excised all the cancerous tissue out of my neck and I’m silently complaining about this perceived inconvenience to me. Although I don’t suffer fools gladly, I’m generally regarded as a patient man so I’m mildly surprised when I begin to wonder how long it will be until medicine begins using Dr. McCoy’s tricorder to wave across my body and cure my ills instead of the archaic use of needles and knives to whittle me like a totem pole.
I think our phobias about blood and our incredibly low tolerance for pain are the reason the greatest advances have been made in the field of medicine. When Ernie Epidural came along with his invention to help combat the pains of labor, women and, believe me, men rejoiced but I’m sure 150 years ago, before we invented those little cups of crushed ice, when women were wandering out to the fields to birth their annual children, many women were praying for someone to invent something to ease their pain because…the back 40 still needs a plowin’. These days I need a tetanus shot every 10 years or so and I much prefer it to the medieval practice of cutting up a pigeon and rubbing it over the affected part even if they only used volunteer pigeons. On a more personal note I have undergone multiple surgeries in the last 15 years on shoulders, knees, heart and neck, each time done through a single hole or vein, which is vastly superior to having them slice through my chiseled abs and being carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey.
The business of technology has perhaps surpassed even medicine in terms of leaps in the last 100 years and I think we can safely attribute that to the following 3 criteria.
1. Americans are better than every other country at whining.
2. We can, for all the good we do in the world, often be the champions of selfishness. All you have to do is watch somebody stop traffic to move 3 lanes over in the course of 50 yards to make the turn they want to make instead of just going to the next corner and making 2 right turns without bothering anyone.
3. Judging from personal experience and viewing my vast circle of friends I can verify that we are all inherently lazy so we expend more energy than we would like to find the few people not inherently lazy and make them invent something to make our lives easier…and we’re not afraid to throw bags of money at them to get them to do it.
This combined lack of effort by the inherently lazy and the inspired effort of the not so inherently lazy has given us computers the size of an aspirin, made the grueling task of mailing a letter obsolete and we are now so slothful that many Americans get mad when they have to push 1 to listen to the message in English. 75 years ago people waited all day in line for a bowl of soup and today people think it’s the end of the world if they have to wait 3 minutes for an ATM so our priorities may be a little skewed. I know high school kids who, if they have to wait more than a second for a song to download to their phone, start crying about being stuck in the 90s…and they weren’t even alive.
So, while we have made reality stars celebrities, I can text someone in Australia and wake them up so we all should agree it is the best of times and the worst of times.
