So, I had to go to a seminar on Wednesday and while I’ve been to hundreds of valuable seminars in the last forty years, this…was not one of those times. I really went looking for a couple of ideas because that is really all you can hope for with some of these but my hopes were shattered like I’d just walked through a sliding glass door without opening it. I was hoping that this seminar wasn’t one of those that is 95% stuff you have to scrape off your shoe after a visit to the dog park just to get 5% worth of valuable information. But this one was tragically filled with obvious homilies and questions from the presenter instead of real information. Questions a cynic like me cannot help but answer sarcastically-No, I don’t want to make more money; Yes-I do want to work forever; No-I believe the moon landing was faked. The seminar began with an introduction of the speaker who gushed about the man being his mentor and all that had meant to him and all I could think was, “Geez, I hope he didn’t advise you to get that haircut?” The seminar focused on selling and new techniques and because I wanted to ensure our sales force and customer service were current technologically and aware of possible marketing opportunities, I gambled that a free seminar would be worth an afternoon of my time but, as it turns out, somebody owes me some money. Now, at first glance, you might think I’m not be the ideal person to attend something like this because I hate sales, I don’t like salespeople, and I can barely tolerate customers, but I was lured in by the free lunch. The seminar location should have been my first clue as to its sketchiness. They’re always held in what is regarded as a decent hotel but when you get there, you’re never quite sure they don’t rent rooms by the hour. And I ended up spending the amount of a good steak dinner to park on the 4th floor of a parking garage that looked like a crime scene in Law and Order.
I’m not saying that all these seminars are get rich quick scams but it appears that most are and it’s odd to see some people attend and they seem to have the hope of a 12-year old girl. It just seems to me that listing your organs for sale on Craig’s List is a little drastic. There is no real-time way to get rich quick. Well, maybe if you’re walking in a crosswalk and you get hit by a city bus you’ll get rich quick but…you won’t be around to spend it. For years I got rich slowly but even that appears to be tapering off. I do know that people get pulled into these scams because I know a couple living on a patch of dirt in Iowa that think they’ll be on easy street as soon as their pair of chinchillas start having sex. There’s a guy with an ostrich ranch in Solvang who thought he’d be rolling in dough once he started selling ostrich meat to restaurants…but it turns out, they’re pretty hard to catch.
I guess I got a few tips to impart to our sales force but I won’t know how they do because I just learned I’m the only living heir of deposed Nigerian royalty…so I’ve got that going for me.
