Is That High Resolution?

We stand with little poise on the precipice of a new year and while some of you may think 2016 was a banner year, I can’t wait for this sucker to be over. We lost princes and princesses, musicians and artists, athletes and comedians who left a hole in our hearts. We even lost Abe Vigoda and Zsa Zsa Gabor…two people we had thought died in the 80s. Every year we think it’s the worst year but that’s only because we’ve already forgotten who died last year but every year people die and resolutions are born.
Like many of you who need it far worse than I, every year I resolve to do a few things better in the upcoming year than I did in the past year but as I close in on perfection, I find it more difficult to resolve so I’ve looked to the internet for suggestions and the internet gods have decreed that I should get a hobby…as if my life wasn’t already one big hobby. Besides, I know how to juggle, play chess and read. Another suggestion is to meditate but I really don’t need a reason to nap. And they always put this one in…Eat Fewer Calories but that would entail eating less or eating things like kale and dirt so I don’t see that happening.
Many of you make resolutions but not that many take them seriously; they’re more like casual promises you’re under no legal obligation to honor but I am taking my resolutions to heart. For 2017 I resolve to never use the following phrases: best case scenario, drinking the Kool-Aid, empower, corporate values, forward-thinking and out-of-pocket. I also resolve to only think…inside the box. And as I age and take a more circumspective look at myself I also resolve to no longer run while juggling chain saws, drink turpentine while smoking or consider pineapple vodka a serving of fruit on my daily food pyramid. I’m also considering not considering the feelings of others when they obviously don’t care about mine and I definitely resolve to not wear a bacon costume and tease my dogs.
Since most of you will be writing your New Year’s resolutions on a cocktail napkin in a bar tomorrow night, I have a few that many of you should consider undertaking in 2017.
1. Don’t take selfies
2. If you must, please endeavor to look like yourself instead of a cartoon duck.
3. If you are on a bad date, get out of it yourself. Don’t go with the fake emergency phone call.
4. Don’t send a text to someone sitting in the same room.
5. Try and finish a chap-stick without losing it in a load of laundry…or a toilet.
6. If you drop food in the kitchen, clean it up. Stop making your dog a vacuum cleaner.
7. Stop drunk texting. Your phone should have a password setting you can only unlock when you’re sober.
8. If you’re walking, put your damned phone away and watch where you’re going.
9. Don’t pick your nose in the car…we can see you.

Happy New Year to you and yours and all the best in 2017 from the IMC Family!
