So, we’re well into the holiday season that I still call Christmas and if you don’t, then I deserve a big thank you for the days off you’re getting without having to buy presents. Many of us have decorated our houses and have lights blinking everywhere during this time of year and while I respect those who don’t, I can also admit we can have a tendency to overdo it. My house looks like the North Pole exploded as I have lights inside and outside, lighted trees and Santas everywhere, reindeer and winter villages have taken over my mantle but that is where it stops because I believe in stationary displays. In fact, though we may be of different beliefs, traditions and religions I think we can agree on one thing…STOP DECORATING YOUR DAMNED CARS! You’re not in some crazy Christmas parade and putting some fake antlers on the side windows of your Volvo doesn’t make it look like Rudolph. Actually, if you’re doing that I suggest you drive to Minnesota on opening day of deer season and see what happens. And if you’re driving around with a wreath tied to the grill of your Escalade, you can go also. When I see a wreath I expect a door behind it so after I knock, I expect to be invited in for cookies and coffee but when I see it on your car, all I get is the sight of you driving to Target with your Starbucks and a Yorkie on your lap. I don’t need to see Christmas spirit on the go. The only other place we see wreathes are at funerals and while those may be festive for you…I rarely hear the organist playing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” And if you’ve 1 or 2 or 16 glasses of the “special” eggnog, don’t put Christmas lights on your car because I hate the people who will spend hours putting 400 lights on an automobile but who won’t spend 10 seconds walking around the car to see that 2 of their 3 brake lights are out. If I see any vehicle dressed up like Santa’s sleigh, I’m going to expect a present.
This being the giving season I’d like to end this on an upbeat note. If you’re traveling over the holiday please feel free to correct the flight attendants when they say in their speech, “when you reach your final destination” because that implies that the plane is going down. There is only one final destination but they have said that for years and it has always been wrong. It’s just a destination…the only final destination we get is when they start shoveling dirt on our faces because even the other option of being reduced to a couple of gold fillings and a pile of ash and residing in an urn in your kid’s closet may not even be final as they may be looking for just the right place to “sprinkle” you.
It’s not really that different in business.
