I know we’re well into the season of thanksgiving, generosity, good will, peace on earth and all that crap but it seems the only way you can recognize the season is because nobody is being thankful, generous, good willy or peaceful; they’re just being crappy. Since I’m the most easygoing, relaxed and reasonable person I know, I’ve decided I should be the bellwether for the season to try and bring some sanity to America.
Since we’re all out and about this season, shopping and dining, here’s a tip that will endear you to all the fellow shoppers and diners around you. If you are in a store or restaurant, GET OFF YOUR DAMNED PHONE! We already don’t like you and nobody wants to hear your whole conversation with someone else we don’t like, so why do you think we would want to follow you around Target hearing half the conversation. And hearing only half is making me forget why I’m there because from the half of the conversation I can hear, I can’t tell if you’re beginning a new relationship…or planning to invade Calgary. And I like Canada so I’m tempted to dial 911. Being a relaxed kind of guy I freely admit I’m in a bit of a mood because I don’t like Target very much. I know they have everything but I still feel like they just dressed a 99 cent store in a tuxedo. And why do they lock up their razor blades? Jeez, you need scissors, a chisel and pickax just to break through the shrink-wrapped plastic case they put them in. It’s easier to break into most ATMs than it is to get through that packaging when you need to change a blade. I get locking up the paint but I’m not getting high sniffing a razor blade. So you have to get an “associate” to unlock the blades and it is usually some high school kid with a walkie-talkie, a drool…and a cold. His name is Todd and he couldn’t decide which color he wanted his hair to be today so he went with skittle-colored and because he just came over from the paint department where he was sampling the fumes, he doesn’t know which key opens the lock. But back to the point…most of you are too young to remember pay phones in stores and restaurants but that’s where you would go to have a conversation that couldn’t wait and they put them out of the way and inconspicuous so you wouldn’t be disturbed and more importantly, not disturb me. They were usually placed on the walls right outside the bathrooms…for that extra ambiance, and you could plan your clandestine meeting, coup or grocery list in private. Now people are trolling the aisles of stores going over their life story with someone they haven’t talked to in 23 years.
If I get a call I have to take and I’m in a restaurant or store, I leave the establishment and take the call outside. Does that make me better than you? Of course it does. And it’s a kindness to you as fellow diners because you don’t need to hear me reassuring the babysitter that the Komodo dragon in the garage is harmless. And while I like gossip as much as the next guy, I don’t want to be strolling the cheese aisle at Pavilions and hear you on the phone with your mother crying because your meth-head brother had his parole denied again. Also, we all have different sounds on our phone for calls and texts and it’s never important to interrupt a conversation to look at a text because there has never been an important text sent. Nobody has ever sent a text that says, “Your pants are on fire” so it can probably wait.
