Elect to Chip Away…

We had a huge election this week and while the results may affect us for the next 4 or 400 years, I think it’s time to put our differences aside and come together as a nation as we have for the past 240 years. The result of every election of this type always seems to offend more than half the country so the whole “majority rules” thing may have slipped through the cracks.
With regard to this election I am this close to asking for a recount because I can’t believe Lay’s is being honest when they tell me that Korean Barbecue flavor beat out Honey Barbecue in the electoral college of potato chip elections this week. First of all, as a reasonably liberal kind of guy, I’m not sure calling something Korean Barbecue isn’t a little racist but, then again, I whisper when I order Polish sausage…or Canadian Club. I also had to choose between Smoked Gouda & Chive vs. Cheddar & Sour Cream and that is like asking me which child I like best…there’s rarely a good answer to that one. They’re two sides of the same potato chip.
We can agree that this year’s potato chip election was the most contentious ever as we had to choose between Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper vs. Olive Oil & Herbs. Those of us on the correct side of the aisle couldn’t imagine how anyone would opt for olive oil & herbs over salt and pepper, our preferred condiments for the last 240 years. The correct side (my side) held rallies in support of salt and pepper because the last thing this nation needs is a healthy potato chip. One of our mottos was, “I’d rather have a heart attack than have it taste like pasta” and that certainly galvanized our base. When we debated the opposition our speaker would just repeat over and over, “Eat kale and die.” Not very mature I’m told but it was better than his original choice of, “Pasta is un-American.”
The last choice we had to make was flamin’ hot vs. fiery roasted habanero and this did more to expose our national prejudices than the others as we had to choose between national spices from Louisiana vs. possibly illegally imported peppers from another land. Oddly, we put racism aside and fiery roasted habanero won the popular vote although we might have a harder time getting them after the wall is built.
Like all self-respecting Americans, when my side doesn’t win I look for someone to blame and because I take my potato chips seriously, I believe the recent voting was the most important in my lifetime and when in doubt…I blame the media. There was rarely any coverage and certainly no in depth looks at Sour Cream & Cheddar that might have exposed flaws of which we were unaware and the media certainly never reported who was the big money behind fiery roasted habanero. They treated some flavors like jokes, not giving them a serious chance and you can’t do that when you’re dealing with potatoes. All facets of the media from print to air have completely transitioned into profit centers who decide what I need to know…as if Brad and Angelina’s custody battle is over anything important like potato chip flavors. And since I’m sure most of his friends already know, I don’t need to know that today is the day I should pick up the phone to call Leonardo DiCaprio and wish him a Happy Birthday, so let’s get the media back on track and tell them…less on celebrity dips and more on potato chips.
