I may have mentioned over the course of the past few weeks that we have an election coming up and I’ve done all I can to avoid talking about it with any ring of sincerity in my words. All that ends today as we argue the really important things…the propositions, and I am at a loss to know whether to be proud or embarrassed that I know so much about them.
The biggest problem with the propositions is that we have them…and that anyone with $8 and a Macintosh computer can get one on the ballot. All you have to do is file some paperwork and stand out in front of Safeway and annoy people until you get enough signatures. People complain about frivolous lawsuits but if I get enough signatures I can irritate you with a proposition that will send all tree frogs to a ranch in Yucca Valley so I can build some condos in Ojai. Another issue with propositions is that they’re written in a language unrecognizable as English where yes often means no and no often means banana.
A prime example of frivolous is that during a time of war, civil strife, climate change and Game of Thrones being off the air, we have not one, but two propositions on plastic bags. That is roughly two too many. Nobody wants to see a turtle wearing a 6-pack holder for a necklace so I’m all for banning them since I’ve been carrying grocery bags in my cars for some time now…but I can never remember to take them into the store so a plastic bag can come in handy. They’re also handy for cleaning up after the dogs and nobody seems to want them back after that.
California also has two propositions related to the death penalty and, once again, they have done their best to confuse the constituency…as if most of us aren’t confused enough already. Another issue with multiple propositions is that it’s hard enough for us to keep one straight only to have another tossed at us like parmesan cheese on a salad. That’s like saying we know lettuce is crap so now we’re going to cover it with something slightly more appealing…something we squeezed out of a cow. If you vote yes on one of them you’re voting to abolish the death penalty…something we never use anyway and if you vote yes on the other, you’re voting to keep it and even speed it up so you’d better pick the right one. It’s like going into a store and finding out they closed all the registers but they’re putting in an express lane. I have friends on both sides of this issue as some think it’s costly and not a deterrent while some people I know are still mad that they banned crucifixions. The best part of the process is that if both propositions pass, the one that gets the most votes wins…it’s like the American Idol of propositions.
We also have one prop that literally means nothing…they’re just asking us to vote on whether we’d like to vote. There is another proposition that allows the whole state to vote on something in your community so a bunch of Raider cheerleaders in Oakland can decide I don’t need another road to the beach.
The last two I’ll mention concern firearms and ammunition sales and marijuana which are generally found on opposite sides of the spectrum so I’m guessing that whichever one you’re for will find you against the other one. Just know one thing…if you need to carry around a gun or pot, you won’t be carrying it around in a plastic bag.
