OK everybody, don’t get excited. I know you’re used to seeing this on Friday but it’s only Thursday so don’t get hammered at lunch today thinking you can sleep it off tomorrow because tomorrow will only be Friday and, unlike me, you have things to do. I will be away for a long weekend vacation visiting the restaurants and tourist traps I think are the least likely to steal my credit card information so the waiter can gas up his car and get a 6-pack of Bud and a bag of Cheetos at their local 7-11. And it’s always something like that isn’t it? You never find your identity stolen and see that somebody used your credit card to make a tuition payment at Harvard. That would almost be refreshing but it’s always somebody buying a Slurpee and maybe some beef jerky or using my card to buy diapers and Jack Daniels on their way to parenting class. I guess I’d just like to see a classier brand of thief. This is America, dammit! Just once it might be nice to see the bad guy charge something from Barnes and Noble like The Art of the Deal so I know they’re trying to better themselves. And if you need beef I would rather see a charge from Ruth’s Chris Steak House than see you bought a dozen Slim Jim’s from your local Quickstop. After living through several generations of thieves, quite frankly, I’m a little disappointed.
On another subject, while I’m away tomorrow I will be missing quite an event here at the office as they have a baby shower scheduled and this is the biggest news since they upgraded the toilet paper in the bathrooms. I’m probably a little more excited about the toilet paper but I’m sure the shower will be almost as much fun. I didn’t even know people were still having babies. Now, at my age, I attend more funerals than showers so it would be a welcome event but I’ll gladly miss it so I don’t have to attend it. I know what you’re thinking…this young lady chose our busiest, deadline-driven time to leave and give birth. And while I have remained mum on the subject, there are many who believe she planned it this way. The rest of us will be pregnant belly-deep in next year’s catalog and website and she’ll be hovering over something that’s trying to learn how to hold its head up. We’ll be looking at new spreadsheets and she’ll be cooing at the baby and trying to say, “You can grow up and be president” without laughing. Now, being the man I am, I have taken the high ground and wish her well and I’m happy to announce that she is having a little girl because…well, we certainly don’t have enough of those.
So, I hope everyone in the office has a wonderful time at the shower and all I know is…if I see a charge on my credit card for diaper wipes and Pampers…I’ll know where to look.
