Are You Dressed Up?

I had a couple of random thoughts this morning and at 9:40 that’s two more than I usually have so my mind is really working overtime. We are all basically creatures of habit and I, though better than most of you, am no different. I usually find myself visiting the library around the same time each day and I always put my right leg in my pants first but that’s probably because I’m left-handed so when the bomb hits and I’m running down the middle of the street with one leg in my pants to escape the mushroom cloud blossoming behind me, I can use my right hand to hold up my pants while my left hand is busy screaming for help. But that’s just a theory because it hasn’t happened yet.
I find nothing inherently wrong with being a creature of habit although I will occasionally change things up by cutting my sandwich diagonally instead of across like a normal person. And it’s not like I’m OCD and standing in the doorway at home flicking the lights off and on 11 times or habitually saving all my $1 bills for a trip around the world. I really only mentioned that random thought to lead me to this random thought. As creatures of habit, Laurie and I go to the same restaurant most Friday nights because it’s good, easy, has a wine Laurie can tolerate and I don’t have to worry about them trying to sneak some quinoa or kale into my food. I can get salad and pasta or even soup if I don’t feel like chewing. I’m sure I’ve made it too easy for the bad guys to track my movements and slip rat poison into my ravioli but I like to live on the edge…everybody knows that.
Anyway, to make a short story even longer, last Friday I heard the waiter telling a customer what kind of salad dressings they had and when he was done, the customer asked if they had one he hadn’t mentioned. Here’s the deal…the waiter is trained to know what salad dressings they offer and if he doesn’t mention it, they don’t have it. He doesn’t have a secret stash of Italian dressing in the back he’s saving for himself. He’s not looking at you and deciding you can’t handle the Zesty Chipotle. See, as a creature of habit, that’s where I would have enacted the little-used, We Reserve the Right to Refuse to Serve Stupidity rule. Did this guy think waiters only mention certain dressings to certain people? Does he think the wait staff meets before every shift and only gets to pick four of the five dressings for that night? Like musical dressings. Or maybe he thought it was a location thing like you had to be seated in Paul’s section if you wanted Ranch dressing but Paul’s section is full so you’re stuck with Darren…and French dressing.
There are two dressings no restaurant ever runs out of and they are oil and vinegar and Thousand Island. The first one is easy because the ingredients are in the name…oil, vinegar and the second one you can make at your table because all Thousand Island is, is ketchup, mayonnaise and a pickle…oh, and a spoonful of hope.
