Seize What Day?

It seems you can hardly blink, sneeze or cough and another year has gone by and we are again celebrating National Empanada Day. We have once more given one of our national days to a food product that should have never been let out of Greece and Spain. It does have a nice ring to it though and we should probably count our blessings that we didn’t choose to call it National Fried Mystery Day.
No matter the efforts the “National Empanada Council” has made, it is never going to make the list of health-conscious choices we should be eating. Instead of being part of the food pyramid, it’s part of the food trough. I don’t know why but I suspect that when you take a ball of dough and roll it out to look like a soft taco and then fill it with whatever you have left over lying around the house, fold it over itself and then press down the edges so you can’t see what’s inside and then deep fry it in lard, it might cause the Surgeon General to come to your house and beat you to death with a salmon. They say they have to seal the edges so stuff doesn’t leak out but I think they’re just trying to hide what’s inside and I’m the kind of guy who would end up eating one stuffed with cough drops and argyle socks. So, while I will try almost anything, I’m not a big fan of mystery foods and I’m not eating anything that’s probably filled with whatever the chef was too lazy to throw away. If you, like many of your friends, are on your way to your annual empanada party, I suggest you look around the host house and see if anything is missing…and geez, make sure you know where their cat is.
As long as we’re wasting our tax money on a presidential campaign, I vote for establishing a council to go over these days and thin the herd of some outdated days nobody knows. We have a National Read a Road Map Day and nobody has read a map since Google was invented. It’s like having a National Roll Your Window Down Day. I still yell that at my kids and they know what I mean but they have no idea why I say it. We also still have a National Eight Track Tape Day and eight tracks turned into dinosaurs almost before they were invented. Some of these days have hit their shelf life and need to be thrown out like last week’s tuna. As much as it may pain some of you, we really no longer need National Tap Dance Day or National Guillotine Day. We no longer enjoy those things although one could argue that we all enjoyed them once.
Next week we always celebrate National Farm Animals Day and I expect the reason we have all the parades, dinners and keys to the city for them is because the following week we have National Eat a Farm Animal Day. Your prize-winning pig probably didn’t see that one coming. Irony aside, we should move or eliminate some of these days. I’m a big fan of National Scrabble Day but two days later we honor National Take a Wild Guess Day so I think one of them should be moved. And is it just coincidence that National Heart Attack Day is the day after National Cheeseball Day? We also still have a National Rubber Eraser Day and we haven’t used those since we were rolling windows down, listening to eight tracks while we read a road map.
