If you’re reading this you likely survived St. Patrick’s Day. If the words are still a little blurry, you haven’t quite recovered. I’ve decided March 17th is just another amateur hour and while we don’t need another one this close to New Year’s Day, it’s nice to give the budding alcoholics a day of their own since no self-respecting alcoholic takes his liver for a walk on St. Patrick’s Day.
I would have thought everyone would stay home and eat corned beef and cabbage yesterday as it is the meal we Americans decided we should ascribe to the Irish. I still find it curious that we come up with things and then give them to other cultures…whether they want them or not or have ever eaten them. We invented the fortune cookie, saw how bad it was and gave it to the Chinese. They didn’t want it and tried to give it back but we said, “Too late!” They knew it was worthless and just started giving the damned things away with the check…and even then they knew they had to give us sliced oranges just to wash the cookie down. It’s like eating an expired credit card; geez, the fortune inside tastes better. Now we’ve come up with corned beef and cabbage and America thought, the Irish are famous for potatoes so they need something to go with the potatoes. All over America we’re now eating corned beef and cabbage on March 17th like it was smuggled out of Ireland under a leprechaun’s hat. It doesn’t matter to us that the only time an Irishman has ever had corned beef and cabbage…he was at his daughter’s wedding.
Even things we steal from other countries we bastardize so much they’re no longer recognizable and nobody wants them back. Once we started putting pineapple and arugula on pizza, the Italians said. “Arrividerci”…so we had to give it to Chicago, who truly messed it up with something called ‘deep dish.’ Apparently they thought America needed something with twice the bread and half the taste. One exception to our food liberating rule is borscht. Even the Russians can’t give that stuff away. These are people who think Siberia is a vacation destination so it’s not a stretch to see they don’t know their way around a kitchen but just how bad does a food have to be if putting sour cream on it, makes it better? England is the other exception. America has tried for years to come up with a dish we can claim is English but we can’t find anyone who cooks that badly…except the Russians.
In addition to our penchant for coming up with things and then trying to blame another country, we have this passion to invent things and convince people they go with the holiday in question. It’s unclear to me because I don’t know how, who or why we decided we needed to invent things to go along with some holidays. Yesterday’s holiday is essentially just a giant wake we hold annually for St. Patrick so did the original caterer serve green Guinness and Irish whiskey? Did he have some really short cooks and that’s how this whole leprechaun thing got started? And I certainly don’t understand why Easter felt like it needed a mascot…and picked a bunny. Bunnies aren’t intimidating. And don’t even get me started on the egg thing. How did that start? Did some Neanderthal come home one day after a hard day trying to make fire and say, “Oompa, we’ve got to get these kids out of the cave. Make them go out and hunt for eggs.” Hard-boiled eggs belong with St. Patrick’s Day anyway. They should be pickled and sitting in a jar on top of the bar next to the guy drinking the green beer.
