It’s Friday so I’m sitting here writing this as I chew on a bagel with some egg salad and it’s good, and it seems a perfectly acceptable way to start the day. You know what it isn’t? It’s not amazing, awesome, mind-blowing or the particularly irritating…off the hook. It’s just egg salad…it’s not curing Ebola or sending pictures back from Pluto. If you think your Chai latte is awesome, what word are you going to use in a few years to describe your 1-hour flight to Helsinki? If you think that dress is amazing, how are you going to describe the coming apocalypse? I don’t mind telling you this influx of hyperbole to which I’m being subjected is making me cry a million tears…see, even I’m doing it and I’m looking for someone to blame.
Like most of our problems, I blame it on the youth. Not the very young but definitely teens. See, it might be awesome for a 4-year old just to wake up and see that nothing has changed…everything is still the same because my teddy bear is right next to me where it belongs. They haven’t been alive enough years to process the concept that this is the way it’s supposed to be. They’re just happy to be part of the world. Teenagers have been around longer and think they get it, so just waking up is old news to them but they haven’t had enough real life experiences to understand what amazing really is. I think that’s why they like horror movies; they haven’t yet figured out that real life will scare the crap out of you. The hardest thing any of them have done so far is take the test to get a learner’s permit. For them to be scared, they have to go to the movies and watch Freddy carve people up with a chainsaw, when all I need to be scared is a phone call from an “Unknown Caller.” They’re riding roller coasters to be scared while I’m worried about this rash on my arm. They’re paying people to scare them and I’m hiding from the mailman.
I certainly don’t mean to imply that adults are immune to this disease of hyperbole as many of you are guilty of the current tendency to embellish. Here’s the deal…there is no such thing as guacamole that is amazing. It’s just guacamole. Avocado, lemon juice, onion, tomato, maybe a little cilantro if you’re feeling frisky. It can be bad, it can be good, maybe even great but it can’t be amazing. You’re certainly not decoding the origins of the universe. Unless it was made of whale blubber and flown to your house by a pigeon with an MBA from Harvard, it’s not amazing. Maybe if a magician had a rabbit in a hat and he waved a wand over it and turned it into guacamole…that might be amazing but I’d still like to have a look at that hat.
There is also a trend to embellish the bad that falls short of accurately describing the situation in question. Losing your village and everyone you know and love because you thought it was a good idea to move to the town somebody decided to build at the foot of an active volcano is a tragedy. Dropping your phone into the toilet is not. You shouldn’t be taking selfies in the bathroom anyway so I think you probably deserved it and we’re all laughing at you. It might be temporarily inconvenient but it’s not like a shark just took your left leg.
