It is now the eve of Thanksgiving and it is time for my annual message of peace and harmony but I think we all know that’s not going to happen. Thanksgiving remains the only holiday where we celebrate food and a successful day involves being forklifted away from the table and deposited on the sofa in front of the TV…and then brought pie. Then you manage 2-3 bites before the tryptophan overtakes you and drops you into a coma for the rest of the afternoon, usually next to a distant relative you wouldn’t put out if he/she were on fire.
I would like to once again thank the Native Americans who brought the pilgrims the first green bean casserole. I still don’t know how they made the cream of mushroom soup or how they managed to dry out and fry those little onion rings over a campfire but they’re awesome. If you, like me, have a lot of friends who are turkeys, you might want to drop them a note because they’re running out of time and in California we’re tougher on turkeys than we are on criminals. If you’re vegan and you’re thinking about brining your tofu in a medley of dirt in an effort to make it taste like turkey…tofurget it.
I spent yesterday in the forest of Costco, gathering supplies for the feast on Thursday. It was a little more crowded than usual; a fact first noticed when you had to park in a dirt lot and be bused in. I managed to outrace an old lady with a walker to get a shopping cart and my luck held because I got the cart with the bad front right wheel that spins on its own like a 12-year old whose Ritalin prescription ran out on Halloween. So now I have to traverse the trails of Costco trying to tilt the cart on three wheels to keep the bad one in the air so it doesn’t hit the ground and yank the cart to the right into a pallet of kumquats.
Many don’t know that in 1942 Congress finally settled on the 4th Thursday in November because they were politicians and had nothing to do since the rest of the country was only…fighting a world war, and they did so for several reasons. Macy’s wanted it then because anytime there was a 5th Thursday in November, they would get an extra week of holiday shoppers and Santa had already flown in from the North Pole for the parade. Detroit and Dallas were also in favor of it because their teams are so bad that nobody will watch them play football on a Sunday. It was also the day that Alexander Graham Bell invented the Butterball Hot Line.
So take a moment tomorrow and give thanks, especially if you’re not roused from your coma on the couch and taken to Walmart to spend the night in a lawn chair by the front door. Remember, if you go somewhere for Thanksgiving and don’t bring anything, you’re not thanksgiving…you’re thankstaking…and you belong at the kiddie table.
