Reading is Fun…duh…Mental

If you’re an avid reader of this, you know I occasionally take umbrage with technology, mostly because people think they can multitask while speeding down my freeways. And while technology has made our ease of contact with one another more convenient at times, we have often traded our ability to speak and spell for that speed and convenience. “B4 u no it” is not English but I understand if you need to rest your thumbs. Even I, as age landslides over me, have mellowed and become more tolerant of people with a penchant to abbreviate. I mean, I still wouldn’t hire you but I no longer actively support your extinction.
I like to read and my favorite aspect of the current technology is my ability to read anything ever written without ever having to turn a page. No more sticking a finger in my mouth and tasting oily newsprint and no more energy expended having to turn my book over to hold my place while I fix snacks (usually something with bacon). I read a lot and my iPad currently stores hundreds of books, magazine and newspaper subscriptions and it is so convenient that the mere thought of physically having to turn a page makes me want to take a nap. I used to never give a thought to turning a page but now, I am at the point where it seems almost insulting to consider performing that action. Hey, if I wanted to work out, I’d join a gym. The books I read are almost exclusively fiction because I live in reality and I’m really not interested in anyone else’s version of reality. In fact, if you are interested in what Teddy Roosevelt was thinking when he rode up San Juan Hill, you need medication. And if you’re looking for the truth in a newspaper story, you probably believe everything you read in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
I think we can agree that printed material is quickly reaching its expiration date. Hooray! Newspapers die so that trees can live. In fact, if you are still spending much time reading a newspaper, you need to get out of the bathroom. I grew to hate reading newspapers and magazines not only for the whole turning the page thing but the fact that before you got to the end of the story, you would get the message, continued on Page 23 and by the time I could find Page 23, I had forgotten what I was reading. After a while, if I got the message, continued on Page 23, I would just think…you can continue without me. Just leave me here like the Donner Party. The other bad thing about continued stories is that occasionally I’d go to the wrong page accidentally and end up finishing a completely different story. I would be reading about “Cats do have nine lives and then” continued on Page 54 and read, “we fillet them down the middle like a trout” because I only turned to Page 53, and then I would start to worry because I didn’t remember when we started filleting cats. The best part of reading my books online is that all I have to do is tap the screen and the page turns…as if by magic…and, of course, my cats are safe.
