Did You Feel a Breeze?

We had a wonderful end-of-summer and retirement luncheon yesterday although we once again celebrated the end of summer on a day when the temperature was in triple figures…and that was in Celsius. I’m pretty sure my salmon was cooked on the sidewalk because it sure tasted like it and I’ve always been curious to know how they get the skin so rubbery. I may have been hallucinating in the heat but I looked at some of the chicken on plates and I was certain it was moving but, it may have just still been alive and running from Colonel Sanders. The other offering for lunch was something they called tri-tip but it was sliced and I’m convinced they only sliced it so we wouldn’t see the claws. I almost forgot to mention we have a vegetarian, someone who has lost her grip on our food chain, so she had a bowl of something that looked like paper mache but they had splashed some green and orange here and there so it had some color…and in the shimmering heat that was rising off the tables, it almost looked like an oasis. The lunch began with a salad and it was clear my lettuce had just given up. There wasn’t enough crunch to even stab it with a fork as it lay limp and flat on my plate like a Dali painting and I had to slide my fork under it like I was operating a fork lift just to get it to my mouth. The meal was ended with a chocolate sundae and it was served in a coffee cup which seemed unusual but by the time I got mine, it had turned into hot chocolate so it was now an appropriate vessel.
We have tended to move the end-of-summer luncheon later and later in the year, apparently shooting for a time when the heat has broken but we continue to miss the mark since yesterday if felt like we were dining in a sweat lodge in Yuma. It’s so hot here even Mike Huckabee seems cool and while we’re all wearing different fabrics…believe me…we’re all wearing “sweat” pants. HR is already talking about next year and moving the end-of-summer lunch to Halloween.
Following lunch there was a round of speeches honoring our fallen leader or otherwise wishing him well in his march toward death…or a 55+ raisin ranch in Indio. I’m sure some of the speakers were serious, well, not me of course, because he is well-liked, respected and a credit to the industry. He has been our style leader for many years although as I look around the offices, it doesn’t seem to have worked on anyone but me. He has been the epitome of savoir faire, esprit de corps, coup de gras, etes vous enceinte, je ne sais quoi or any other foolish French idiom that may come to mind and we did our best to wish him well as we melted into the carpet. The only thing in the room that wasn’t melting was the fine gold watch he received, which has a very convenient second hand…so he can count the time he has left.

It’s not really that different in business.
