Let me see if I’ve got this straight…we invented the Pony Express just because carrier pigeons could only carry one note at a time, and then we invented the telegraph because the horses were just costing us too much in hay. Then we invented the telephone so we didn’t have to write at all because all those swirls in olde English were making our fingers cramp. Then we invented email because we discovered we really didn’t want to talk to these people that much so writing didn’t seem that bad. Then we invented cell phones because we really did want to talk to those people; we just wanted to do it on our terms and that was while we were in our cars cutting other people off. I mean, what’s the sense of driving poorly if you can’t tell anyone about it? Then we realized we REALLY don’t want to talk to anyone, even on our terms, so we invented texting because you could still see the road while you were talking on your phone and we had to put a stop to that.
So this whole texting fad seems to be gaining ground and it may be around for a while like the lava lamp, but I guess I’m just having problems with the timeline. We had just invented a way to talk to anyone at any time…and take a picture of our omelet, but before you could say, “Eek, I’m going to crash” we had to invent a way to not ever talk to anyone again. I believe if texting had been invented before the phone, people would think it was genius so if Alexander Graham Telegraph had been thinking about putting a tiny little message machine in everyone’s hands, he really would have been on to something…no mail, no talk, no human contact…perfect!
Imagine what it would have been like…messages delivered almost instantaneously and you wouldn’t have to wipe pigeon crap off your shoulder. But Mr. Bell took over and gave us the phone first with the lame excuse that…your mother wants you to call her, so for the blink of an eye, we actually spoke to one another. The reasons the phone continued to improve by leaps and bounds was we were willing to do almost anything to keep from having to use our fingers. We went cordless because we were tired of wrapping ourselves in the cord as we walked around the kitchen and then we lost the rotary dial because it was so much work if you miss-dialed the last number because you had to start all over…if I wanted to work out, I would go to the gym.
So now we have fine-tuned the cell phone to the extent that it now fits in my wallet and does everything but put air in my tires so the next logical step is to…stop using it as a phone and text everyone we don’t want to talk to on the phone…using the phone. Yet we’re still so lazy that we’ve decided that words are just too damned long and we have invented a new language to supposedly speed up the message to the person we don’t want to talk to in the first place. Here’s the deal…u is not you, 4 is not for, and if you’re going to type WTF, at least have the courtesy to finish it with a ? You’re supposed to be adults.
