Due to the random collision of chromosomes, the resulting implosion leaves all of us with an array of body types and skin, hair and eye colors so numerous as to embarrass a bag of Skittles. How this array is assembled can determine people’s perceptions. While many of us are blessed with an plethora of wonderful qualities, some of us are also afflicted with noses that beat us through doorways by several seconds, ears that never stop growing, feet more suited for walking on water or a liver the size of the new Fiat. It’s like playing a game of gene poker and you just don’t know what cards you’re going to be dealt. Your grandfather may have been predestined toward baldness so you started losing your hair in 3rd grade or you may be of Yugoslavian descent so we can’t even begin to list the issues with which you are faced. The most important thing I’d like you to remember is…don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.
I really had very little to do with it. Maybe I was just the fastest kid in the gene pool. Whatever it was, it has resulted in the Adonis you see when you gaze upon me. Though I was born much too late to be the model for the Statue of David, I have worked hard to cultivate the beauty I’ve become. Every day I work for minutes to maintain the finely-tuned physical specimen I am and that’s harder than it sounds. I personally do a sit up every morning just to get out of bed and I comb my hair multiple times per day to keep working my perfect biceps. My triceps work consists of raising my arms signalling touchdown as I sit on my couch on Sunday. I also yawn at least hourly to optimize the cut of my jaw and I can no longer count the number of times I shrug my shoulders.
It is also incumbent on you to note that this is not easy on me either. How do you think I feel as roses wilt in shame as I walk by? Do you think I like making grown men weep and curse their heritage? It’s also uncomfortable to me to have to hear the whispers and gasps of astonishment as I walk through the offices and stores. You’d think I’d be used to it by now but I’m not. It’s also insulting to be looked upon as merely a thing of beauty. I should not be blamed because someone is Kafkaesque while I am Clooneyesque. It is painful to always be considered the main course while others are seen as cole slaw and potato salad. Many of you think because of my physical presence, I am incapable of doing anything else; as though my version of multitasking involves walking and chewing gum at the same time. I urge you to shelve your stereotypes, look past my physical beauty, and see the greater wonder beneath the skin. Someone can be beautiful and still be able to spell or know the capital of South Dakota.
