I like Facebook and I have around the same number of crazy friends as anyone but it’s nice to see people you don’t normally see and catch up on what they think is important. It’s usually radically different than what I think is important since I don’t really care that your schnauzer has adopted a ferret and I won’t watch your video of an emu playing chopsticks on the piano. I never ask to friend anyone but I generally will “friend” anyone who requests it just for what I might perceive as their entertainment value and you really have to push my buttons to get me to unfriend you. Or you can just not be funny. Now we all have friends we consider too conservative or too liberal or post too many pictures of their family or dogs or were just released from jail but they bring something to the table that keeps me from deleting them. I have one friend who sounds like he lives in a hut in Montana with a gallon of water and a case of Dinty Moore but he posts songs from the 60’s and since I stopped listening to music about the time of the moon landing, I keep him around.
I can deal with my friends or those with whom I try to remain friendly but my real problem with Facebook is the influx of suggestions (ads) these days and that is only because I can’t understand how I got on some of these lists or…how I get off them. Facebook says they send the suggestions (ads) that my friends like and they assume because my friends like them, I will also. All it does is make me wonder which of my friends like “Butterfly Liners”…and what they are? Why does Facebook suggest I might be interested in “Burial Expenses?” Did I trip some sort of switch with my last birthday or do they know something I don’t? And I don’t care that you have a 2-for-1 special this week. Maybe I lost a friend last week and that put me on the list? I would like all my Facebook friends to take one step forward. That should clear it up. Certainly, too many of my friends are aging because many of the suggestions (ads) are health-related and I don’t know if I should be insulted or worried. “Snoring Solutions” and the “American Sleep Association” seem to know more about my night than I do and I’m concerned they might have a microphone in my bedroom. I received one today about a “Men’s Slimming T-shirt” and now I’m thinking they have my bathroom scale bugged. At this point I probably need more than some belly spanx because my hourglass figure is morphing into a barrel. I’ve also learned that for $5 and three clicks I can turn my face into a cartoon but now that seems a trifle redundant because when I look in the mirror, I already see Yosemite Sam staring back at me.
I’m also moderately insulted that Facebook appears to believe I’m a couch potato because I have learned I can sign up and have a suitcase of wine delivered every month…as well as meals, desserts and puppy chow, which they seem to believe I’ll be starting to eat soon since I deleted all the wealth-building ads. Just because when I can’t reach the remote, I yell at one of my kids to slide it over to me…doesn’t mean I’m lazy. They get an allowance. I’m pretty sure everyone knows I’m kidding. They don’t really get an allowance.
Instead of just deleting all the ads I wanted to do something to stop them at the source. Someone told me I could go into preferences and stop the “suggestions” but I went there and there wasn’t a button I could mark that said, “Stop sending me all this crap.”
