Mother’s Day is Sunday and that explains why I spent part of last weekend mired in a department store wondering how it had all come to this while cursing Woodrow Wilson. Laurie was shopping for her mother and herself, since I know better than to try and buy her clothes, and I was relegated to holding the purse and enough clothes to make me look like I was a looter on my way home after a riot. I’ve got about eight hangers on each arm and she’s starting to hang things on my lower lip. The only thing I’m missing is a sign that says, “40% OFF.” Happy Mother’s Day. Thankfully, half the things will look different under real light and I’ll be bringing them back.
Anna Jarvis started this whole ‘Mother’s Day’ thing in 1908 because apparently, she liked her mother. Her mother was a peace activist during the Civil War which was a little like Gandhi talking to the Hatfields and McCoys. President Wilson signed it into law in 1914 because he was after the female vote…which they wouldn’t even get for six more years so I guess he really was thinking ahead. Few people know that when Hallmark and others started selling cards in the early ‘20s, Anna tried to get the holiday she invented cancelled. Most men wish she had succeeded. In her warped mind, the day was supposed to be sentimental, not profitable. Happy Mother’s Day. She’d go ballistic these days if she found out that now America invents holidays just as an excuse to have a sale. You need to sell some cars? You won’t believe the discounts on In-Law’s Day!
Congratulations to the Royal Family for celebrating Mother’s Day with a new heir, or really a spare. They really have short list of names from which to choose…you’re not going to find anyone named Courtney or Jose in the royal family. So they chose Charlotte where, in America, we only associate it with a web. Great, now the royals have two kids to get beat up by the neighborhood kids because we all know her brother, when he starts school in 2018, is going to get knocked around for being the only George in class.
We also celebrated Mother’s Day early with Barbara Walter’s heart-warming interview of Mary Kay Letourneau. So now we have to celebrate Mother’s Day and mark this day as the day America officially ran out of things to talk about. This interview set back Mother’s Day about 107 years. Barbara has interviewed every president and world leader and is among the brightest of the bright so why stoop to interview a convicted child molester? Happy Mother’s Day. I’m sure she didn’t do it for the money but she might as well have been interviewing people she found around schools in windowless vans. Mary Kay Letourneau, for those of you too busy to keep up, was a married schoolteacher with four children who, at 34, fell in love with one of her 12-year old students. I suppose that’s the concept most hard to grasp since most of us rarely meet a 12-year old we don’t want to kill. She gave birth to one child while out on bail and to the next while in prison. Happy Mother’s Day. The only thing better would have been if, during the interview, Mary Kay was drinking coffee out of a cup that said, “World’s Best Mother.”
