Technology is taking over our lives and I’m more than happy to give it up. In fact, I’m eagerly anticipating the day medicine takes a giant step forward and finally finds a cure for stupidity. That would be the real “leap for mankind.” The way things are going that should be in the next week or two because, so far, everything we’ve seen on TV has come true. We all watched Star Trek, Deep Space Whatever, the Jetsons…and everything we saw in those shows has happened…except for flying cars and the fact that they seemed to be able to breathe the air on every planet. But that’s TV and most of the time they get everything backward. Don’t believe me? I can pay for almost anything now just by pointing my phone at it but half the things we saw on the Flintstones we can’t do yet.
So, while I’m comfortable with technology, I’m not so deluded as to think it’s not going to break down occasionally. What brought this to mind is that last week a Google internet server in San Francisco went down for a couple of hours and at least five people called 911 to complain. As far as I’m concerned, these are five people we don’t need. These very people are the reason we don’t have flying cars yet. They’re bringing down the curve. I know people are spoiled but that level of stupidity can no longer be tolerated. People who use computers should be smarter than that. This is the real reason we need to expand the three strikes law because these people are criminally stupid. If you’ve called the President because you got the wrong sauce with your chicken mcnuggets and if you’ve asked your doctor if you could catch a cold through the phone and if you’ve called 911 in San Francisco because for two hours you couldn’t get on the Home Shopping Network…that’s it…we put you away forever…no parole. And no conjugal visits…we need to clean up the gene pool and, I’m sorry, but yours didn’t make the cut.
One of the downsides of the internet is that it has given us an opinion and we’re a dangerous society when we exercise our opinion. Take Yelp for instance; it has given voice to millions of people who wrongly imagine themselves a cross between Wolfgang Puck and Martha Stewart when, in reality, they’re more of a cross between the Pillsbury Doughboy and Eleanor Roosevelt. Now, I haven’t been in the service industry so when using Yelp I always give more credence to the good reviews figuring if they liked it, I’ll like it also. Conversely, I give no credence to the bad reviews because there are people out there doing nothing but writing bad reviews. What they don’t seem to understand is if your review is rude, loud and obnoxious, why would I think you were any different in the restaurant? I’m afraid I’m going to need to hear the other side of the story before I stay away. If you pass out under your table and later complain that the server was late bringing you your cosmopolitan, that’s not going to cut a lot of ice with me.
The biggest problem with the internet is that it has given a voice, too often anonymous, to millions of people who don’t know what they’re saying…kind of like our government…but meaner. We’ve made it so easy for the minions to comment and we need to make it easier for people to respond. Of course, when people go hunting I don’t think it’s fair unless the deer can shoot back.
