Geez, it’s almost embarrassing to be a liberal these days. Even with the new Obamacare hiccups we still have enough morons in the right wing with senators and congressmen not quite understanding how the internet works to keep us even. For every dumb idea we come up with they have something equally idiotic…like privatizing Social Security. They may never live that one down. And in the old days for every Jesse Jackson we had, they had their Strom Thurmonds and now, at your place of choice, we’d be happy to have Gloria Allred square off against Rick Perry in a cage match. Those aside, if there is a line in the sand, liberals have clearly crossed it. I had occasion the other day to watch my niece play soccer at our local middle school. After the game, as I walked through the school to my car, I walked through the lunch area and I noticed a sign on one of the tables. It was designated a “Peanut Free” table and that’s when I realized I was staring at the end of the universe. This means two best buds can’t sit down and enjoy lunch together if one of the moms had the gall to pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. In our Utopian efforts to be all things to all people, we seem to be failing everyone. Hey, people have allergies…I get it, but that’s why they make EpiPens and Benadryl. That’s what should be in the kid’s backpack. Just in case someone in the same zip code unwraps a Snickers. Can these kids not go to the zoo because an elephant might sneeze? This is southern California and the lunchroom is outside so do we need to treat peanut dust like acid rain? It’s not like you’re having a picnic in George Washington Carver’s backyard. How protective do we need to be? Do the peanut vendors at Dodger Stadium need to wear hazmat suits like they’re dealing with nuclear waste? Do I have to have a warning sign on my door at Halloween because I’m giving away peanut M&Ms? I’m allergic to shrimp but you don’t see me calling my congressman demanding a shellfish-free zone. And I like to swim in the ocean but I don’t expect them to move all the shrimp to Lake Michigan and I’m not screaming for Wolfgang Puck to take shrimp cocktail off the menu at Spago.
In concept I’m in favor of the ADA and I think they’ve done some good things but like many government entities they have fallen prey to the tired and faulty concept of “if this is good, more must be better.” Well, it’s not. Wheelchair access was a no-brainer; in fact, anyone with half a brain would have thought of it before they built all those stairs and curbs and then we wouldn’t have had to go back and build ramps and cut out the curb corners at intersections. But sometimes we have to expect people to have, and use, some intelligence and sometimes the majority has to rule. We don’t elect a president with 80% of the popular vote and then give the White House to some guy in Utah who got 6 votes because he made all his wives vote. I’m in favor of braille lettering in elevators but we don’t need FAA flight manuals written in Braille. Anyway, we have books on tape. I’ve railed against warning labels in the past but we are one baby step from having a label on our fork that says, “Do not insert into eye.”
