I’m a big supporter of adoption because every child deserves a home, even though not every parent deserves a child. That being said it doesn’t mean I’m jetting off to Somewhereis-stan, Macau, Somalia or Mississippi and strolling through orphanages like I’m walking down the aisle at Walmart. No, when I get the urge to adopt, I visit my local animal shelter. Pets are easier to care for, there are no diapers to change and they rarely throw up on your shirt. And while they may eat a shoe occasionally, you don’t have to buy them a car, braces or a dress for the prom. We all know adopting a child should give them a better life, but adopting a pet will keep them alive. So, I’m not here to proffer that pets are better than children because…of course they are. They’re happy to go anywhere, they don’t fight in the back seat and they usually don’t ask, “Are we there yet?” No parent ever has turned to a pet in the back seat and shouted, “I swear I’ll turn this car around…” And no matter how bad a person the rest of the world rightly thinks you are, your pets love you.
The downside is that the price for adopting children and pets is about the same and you’re never sure what you’re going to get but…we have our own children and we’re still not sure what we got. Duke is our latest rescue and he has a minor size issue. When we got him he fit comfortably in the palm of my son’s hand and he was projected to be about 40 pounds. Well, he’s now over 90 pounds and barely fits into a Buick. Moe, our other dog, and both cats just walk under him like his legs are trees in the forest and he thinks every toilet in the house is his personal water bowl. When he and Moe play tug-of-war, Moe ends up looking like the tail of a kite as he’s whipped around the room. As Duke approaches his 2nd birthday he looks like some kind of a guard dog. Let me tell you…appearances can be deceiving because his guarding seems to be situational at best. He can “guard” chicken. He can “guard” chicken right down to the bucket it came in and if you need someone to “guard” a pork chop…he’s your guy. It’s funny because when we go for walks in the hills he will square off against a coyote or mountain lion but when he’s home he’s afraid of the vacuum. He loves to run even though he doesn’t know where he’s going. He’s like the guy who’s driving around lost but doesn’t care because he’s making great time. He’s pretty smart and he’ll do just about anything for just about anything that’s bacon-flavored but let’s face it…he’s not going to Stanford. He watches me with a mathematical eye as I divide the dog bones to ensure he gets more because he’s bigger but then he stares at me while I’m in the shower like he thinks I have some sort of escape hatch built in or I’m going to drop through the drain into the Bat Cave. He has a trunk full of bones, antlers, socks and ropes but his favorite toy is the squeaky ball that makes a noise so obnoxious we have to hide it at night to get any sleep. If I had to describe the sound I would say it most resembles the sound you get when your lawn mower runs over a cat.
