Years ago there was a big push around something called the serenity prayer. I mean it was everywhere. It was on every dorm room wall so every time you lifted your head to take a shot, you saw it. Grandmas around the country were needlepointing the damned thing into throw pillows. They even made alcoholics memorize it though they may have just been testing their cognitive functions. As I recall it had something to do with changing the things you can and accepting things you can’t change. Wisdom was in there somewhere but most of us couldn’t figure it out. In any case, as I look around my little corner of the world, that crap ain’t working. People keep trying to change things they can’t, few have the courage to change the things they can and wisdom appears to be only a concept that is not practiced in reality. While there are a lot of things I don’t like but have little chance of changing, I tend to go with the flow and let everyone with an agenda rail on futilely. I’m not a big fan of the Federal Reserve but nobody is listening to me so the things I’d like to change tend to be a little lighter in nature. I don’t like it when the elastic in my boxers breaks but I’m not picketing Jockey; I just change my shorts. PETA wants me to eat Brussels sprouts instead of cow and the chance of that happening is somewhere between the N and the O. I don’t like it when a goose headed for Toronto gets sucked into the engine of my 747 and the captain decides to turn around and land instead of crashing but I just go with it. He’s the professional so I defer to him. And why are we still fighting over parking spots in the shopping center? My doctor makes me park on the street and walk in because he knows it’s likely the walk will be the only exercise I get. Yet we have people fighting to get as close to the front door as possible. I can barely get the side of beef in my cart out the front door of Costco without hitting a parked car. And I’d like doctors to stop giving out handicapped stickers to everyone with a case of pinkeye. I have a friend (who’s much older than I) whose knees were made in a metal shop somewhere and I’m fine with him having a sticker, although his wife made him walk the Great Wall of China so now I’m even starting to think he is suspect. I’d like doctors to, at least, have to have the ailment for which they’re prescribing the sticker. I’m sure that would help tighten the system up because I really don’t like seeing people the government thinks are permanently disabled pass me on the track like I’m running in a barrel of tapioca. What I really don’t like but can’t change is that scientists have informed us that orangutans plan their travel and share it with their families and I’d like to change that because now every time I have to go somewhere and forget to tell my wife she says, “I should have married that monkey.”
