Happy 3rd of July everyone! As I walk around the offices I see people, who haven’t taken the day off, pretending to work but I know they’re really going over tomorrow’s menu in their head or trying to decide which finger they can afford to lose when that firecracker explodes in their hand. Because nobody needs all ten, right? I’m hoping I only lose the hair on my arms and maybe one eyebrow. The 4th of July is my favorite holiday for a multitude of reasons. I grew up in the military and I appreciate everything our soldiers have done for us for the last 237 years. If not for them, I wouldn’t be able to eat hot dogs and fall asleep watching an NCIS marathon on TV tomorrow…with the flag flying in front of my house. They are the reason you can rail against Obama and Rush Limbaugh in the same sentence. They’re also the reason we have Hummers and Justin Bieber in chamo pants so I’d say we’re even.
I love reading about the Revolutionary War mainly because I’m always shocked to remember that France was on our side…and they helped. Since then we’ve been their ally in two world wars and the most they’ve done when we got there is point East, give us some cheese and say, “Germany’s that way.” Most of us had to learn about our independence in history or civics classes but my friend Jed is the only person still around who watched Tom and Ben sign the Declaration of Independence; in fact, he was next to sign it but after John Hancock wrote so big, there wasn’t room for Jedediah Friedman. Like that was the only reason. We can certainly agree with our break from England over the taxation and unalienable rights deal but I was surprised to learn one of those rights was for better dentistry. As it turned out, nobody wanted those English teeth. That’s why George Washington was so mad. He had those walnut dentures and his breath always smelled like furniture polish. So far I think the system works pretty well once you balance the fact that our first government gave all the credit to a God or Creator and now if the government mentions the word God or Creator, the ACLU uses their unalienable right to file suit.
If you think about all the holidays we celebrate, Independence Day retains most of what our forefathers envisioned. While we’ve bastardized it with some commercialism, it remains largely the way John Adams pictured it…unless you’re looking for a new Hyundai. They wanted it celebrated with pomp, fireworks, games, feasts and parades and we continue in that vein today. We’ve just supplanted their version with BBQ, baseball and potato salad.
So, from all of us, we wish you a sane, healthy and happy 4th. Remember, the fireworks display is supposed to end with a sparkling American flag, so if you’re somewhere and yours ends with a sparkling Britney Spears…sue somebody. It’s the American way.
