Here in southern California we really don’t celebrate the onset of summer like most of the country since the sun usually shines around here and the only blip on the screen is the occasional quake. And we just ride those out like we’re on a surfboard…or a mechanical bull. It’s not like we have to strap ourselves to a eucalyptus tree with a bungee cord as a hurricane passes through Tampa or head for the root cellar when a tornado touches down in Oz. Most Californians don’t even know what a root cellar is. I’ve been told it’s like a wine cellar, except instead of chardonnays and pinots, it has spiders and rats. Where would you rather be stuck? But even though the weather is usually temperate, we still do more things on summer days because well…we have more day.
Some of the best things about summer around here are the concerts in the park. Over the years I’ve seen just about every kind of band in an outdoor venue and it can be a nice change to listen to music, drink too much and pass out in a lawn chair instead of on your couch. Ahhh, fresh air. But while I’ve heard just about every kind of music at an outdoor concert, one of the things I’ve never heard outside is the Brandenburg Concertos on a pipe organ. I’m guessing this has something to do with the logistical problems of getting an organ around since most of the good ones are the size of a 2-story building. Hell, you need an 18-wheeler and a crane just to dust under one. As an example, the Longwood organ weighs 55 tons. That’s probably why it isn’t Guns ‘n Roses ‘n Organ. Tough to slip one in the back of your van to head to the next gig. Likely the same reason you don’t see them in a marching band. Unless you had those guys who pulled the space shuttle through L.A., you were out of luck.
I’d kind of like the pipe organ to become part of the mainstream musical family because I’d like to see Jerry Lee Lewis rocking Great Balls of Fire on this wind-powered musical instrument. With all the keyboards and pedals he’d be moving so fast the wind energy produced could power a small city. And when I’m on a boardwalk or riding the subway somewhere, I’m used to seeing somebody with a guitar, sax or harmonica playing for spare change. I don’t have a problem with that but if I saw a guy sitting in a park playing a church organ, I’d put a whole dollar in his hat. But no matter the hue and cry from the masses for more pleasant dirges from pipe organs, we’re still limited to finding organ music mostly in churches and at sporting events. It may be only coincidental but aren’t those the two places where people pray the most? Aren’t you either in one group praying to keep your home safe, or in the other group praying for a home run? I know avid baseball fans who truly believe God is watching over their team while he sits on a cloud eating a Dodger Dog. And he might be, but my devoutly catholic friends believe he’s wearing a Notre Dame sweatshirt.
