Don’t Miss an Opportunity…

Welcome to my version of the week in review…the Olympics ended and apparently the same people who complained about the opening ceremonies, stayed tuned to complain about the closing ceremonies, while the 300 billion of us watching the events could not have cared less and ignored them as we watched the world’s greatest athletes perform on the world’s greatest stage.  It was their show and if they wanted to have David Beckham cruise down the Thames in a tux, that’s fine by me.  My favorite part was when the “queen” jumped out of the helicopter; not because of the act but of the people that asked me, “Do you think that was really her?”  I believe the same people that complained about the opening would complain about the dinner salad when they know the bone-in rib eye is on its way to their table…and well, that’s just stupid.  The U.S. led the medal count and so far Belarus has the lead in medals returned because of positive drug tests but the results (pun intended) are not all in.  Heartbreakingly, the U.S. was shut out of the medal race in rhythmic gymnastics so that’s another good reason to have those events stricken in 2016.  It would seem ribbon, hula hoops and Pilates balls are not our thing.  I guess we’re only good at real sports.  Also under review for the week is the weather.  While the hot spell hasn’t exactly broken, at least it’s cooled enough so my ears aren’t sweating.  And the weather reporters have stopped interviewing nearly comatose old women, asking them, under hot lights, how they’re coping in the heat.  What they began doing instead was an exercise in self-importance because they began apologizing for the weather as if they had control or were somehow at fault.  The cynic in me assumes they did this so they could take credit for the cooling period when it comes but I wouldn’t be surprised if most of them actually believe the Harry Potter movies are real.  If they only had a wand, they could wave it and chant, “weather-o change-o.”  We did learn that most people, without air conditioning, flock to the mall and theatres so I think movie producers are missing an opportunity if they don’t re-release their bombs during a heat wave.  You have a captive audience just trying to stay cool and if you showed “Green Lantern” or “Green Hornet” or lately anything by Adam Sandler, you might make a few dollars.
