What do you do when (or if) something good happens to you? We’ve learned, to our dismay, that over the years many of you have opted for some sort of a dance to celebrate. Maybe you get a big order or score a goal or just fry the perfect egg, and that’s enough to get your feet moving. For me just waking up every morning is a good thing but I don’t break into some kind of happy dance when my feet hit the floor. Why? Because I don’t dance. Now I’m athletic and reasonably coordinated so I can float around the parquet in time to the music but can I dance? Noooo. And at the risk of being too unkind, neither can you. It’s been my experience that most people think they can dance. Well, they’re wrong. And if people have told you through the years that you’re a wonderful dancer…then they are likely lying to you out of concern for your feelings. Unless you’ve been told by someone who unambiguously despises you, you should take that compliment with something more than a grain of salt. We see you cavorting in hotel ballrooms, high school gyms and at weddings for the cousin of your dental hygienist. There appear to be two schools of thought fostered by those who cannot dance. The first is spectacle dancer and he is out on the floor wildly gyrating on the off chance something he does might be confused with a dance move. With arms akimbo and legs bouncing around like his feet are on fire, he thinks he has all the moves. He should know that when we see those moves, all we can think is…is that a dance or a giraffe trying on a bikini. Here’s another clue. If you think you’re dancing and someone calls 911 because they think you were struck by lightning…you can’t dance. That happens far too often. The second school contains invisible boy. He is out there because it is quite possibly the closest he will get to someone of the opposite gender and he is moving so little for fear of looking like the first guy. The upright posture and the sweat pouring off him are the only proofs of life. The only thing that distinguishes him from someone in a coma is the feeding tube. So if you think the fox trot is what happens when it’s running from the hounds and the only thing you know about the tango is that it takes two, stop telling people you can dance. I have some young friends who say they can dance hip-hop but they can’t even figure out where the front of their baseball cap goes so how am I supposed to believe them? And if by chance you are reading this while in a huddle planning your touchdown dance, please stop. The mechanical robot is not a dance. Also, if you’re driving down the road in your pickup with a square dance club decal on the back window; it’s time to get rid of the frilly skirts. Pat (maybe not her real name), a lovely lady in our offices goes out dancing all the time and maybe she can dance but we really just have her word for it. It might just be her way of meeting gentlemen. You know who can dance? The Riverdance guy. Oh, and that little penguin. Now those were some happy feet.
