You may have children involved in soccer, dance, hockey, gymnastics or baseball but around these parts the weekend around the 4th signals the end of the all-star softball tournament season and parents get to pretend there is still some summer left for the rest of the family. You have spent the previous 10 weeks alternately delivering and trailing a dozen 8-year old girls to and from practices and tournaments, and your decision to have another child has been sorely brought into question. You’ve traveled to major cities and unwittingly made hotel reservations in a zip code as far as possible from the tournament site, and you’ve traveled to small towns where the only attraction is the town water tower proclaiming them state wrestling champs in 1957. At this site you’re housed in a motel advertising, “24-Hour Eats” and “Hourly Rates.” A favored arm of my extended family just experienced this again after some years away from the fray, owing to a belated addition to the family. What can I say? It’s the Catholic side of the family. Ahh, parenthood. There is always a lot of talk about youth competitions but they never seem to delve to the root of the problem…you, the parents. And if parenthood wasn’t problematic enough, now you have to deal with other parents. So, while the girls are seemingly conjoined at the hips, you are doing your best to avoid the majority of the parents. Some are too intense and some actually believe the next step is a full ride to UCLA because their daughter is one of the few who can find first base without her GPS. My favorite is the Mom who espouses fair play and sportsmanship and then makes a sailor blush with a red-faced rant at the umpire, judge or referee. And nowadays if you put 12 girls together, you’ll get one set of parents pretending they’re vegans so you can’t make bacon the centerpiece of any team dinners or game snacks. Suffices to say, most of these people are not making your Christmas card list. Some years you have to hope you’re lucky enough to have a parent responsible for bringing a blender to every tournament so you can have margaritas every night while the kids are terrorizing the hotel’s hot tub. The last time you are herded together with the other parents is when the season culminates with a team party. My friends hosted the dinner this year for two reasons; they have the most toys and… they’re really tired of driving. And it’s a pretty good-sized gathering because if you’ve been out of the loop for a while, you should know that with divorces, step-this and step-that, boyfriends and girlfriends, there’s about 39 “parents” for the 12 girls. So they were moderately surprised when the 2 people designated to bring wine each brought one bottle. ONE bottle!?!? Clearly this task was delegated to the wrong people. They could have each brought a wine barrel and they would have been emptied and turned into flower pots before the night was over. What were they thinking? They went through 10 bottles before they finished dumping all the girls into the pool and another dozen over dinner while 11 of the girls tried to get the vegan to eat a hot dog.
